Empowering young people and women to shape a better tomorrow

Data from 2024 to 2026
Building a future where every young person and woman can thrive
Kesho Yetu Initiative (KEY) is a woman and youth led organization founded in 2019 as a community based organization in Urambo, Tabora. In 2026, KEY was registered as a national NGO, marking an important milestone in our journey of growing grassroots solutions into sustainable, community led change.
Headquartered in Urambo, Tabora Region, Tanzania, we work alongside communities across the country to turn lived experience into leadership through storytelling, advocacy, education, and hands-on skills development that help young people and women find their voice, build real opportunity, and shape their future.
Our Vision
A future where every young person and every woman can realize their potential and shape Kesho Yetu, our tomorrow.
Our Mission
To empower women and young people through education, skills development, storytelling, and advocacy for sustainable, inclusive impact.
Opportunity is not equally distributed.
Across Tanzania, many young people and women continue to face barriers to economic opportunity, skills development, leadership, wellbeing and meaningful participation in decisions that affect their lives.
Limited Voice & Participation
Excluded from decisions that shape their future.
Social & Wellbeing Challenges
Barriers to health, wellbeing, and safe spaces.
Limited Economic Opportunity
Restricted access to income and market linkages.
Program pillars built around the real needs of Tanzanian communities today
Social Wellbeing, Health & Advocacy
Mental health, SRHR, menstrual health, GBV prevention, safe spaces and women's voices.
Gender Justice & Community Resilience
Advocacy against gender based violence, community dialogue, and partnerships that strengthen referral systems and long term resilience.
Leadership, Civic Participation & Movement Building
Strengthening leadership capacity, confidence, civic engagement and collective voice among young people and women.
Economic Empowerment & Livelihoods
Skills training, mentorship, and start up support that help young people and women build sustainable income and financial independence.
From voice to opportunity to action that changes lives
Before we look at where KEY intervenes, we work the approach that shapes every program, from first contact with a community to lasting local ownership.
Listen
We start in the community, listening to young people and women to understand their real needs and priorities.
Equip
We deliver education, skills training, and safe spaces that build practical, lasting capability.
Amplify
We help voices travel further through storytelling, advocacy, and community-led campaigns.
Connect
We build partnerships with institutions and communities to sustain impact well beyond a single program.
Focus areas that guide every intervention
Each intervention is designed with the communities we serve, so change lasts beyond a single workshop or campaign.
Social Wellbeing & Advocacy
Reduce stigma and promote open dialogue around gender based violence, mental health, and reproductive health.
Leadership & Civic Participation
Strengthen leadership capacity, innovation, confidence, and civic engagement among young people and women.
Partnerships & Collective Action
Build partnerships with communities, institutions, and organizations to expand the reach and impact of our work.
Economic Empowerment
Enhance economic participation, entrepreneurship, and financial independence among young people and women.
What our stakeholders say about our work
"Before the programme, I was afraid to talk about menstruation. Now I understand my body better and I can speak about menstrual health without feeling ashamed."
"I learned that violence is not only physical. I can now recognise emotional abuse and know that women deserve support and a safe space to speak."
"I realised that my voice matters. I can speak about issues affecting women and encourage other women not to remain silent when they need support."
"I learned things about my menstrual health I had never been taught before. The campaign made me realise menstruation is something we can talk about openly."
